Flow Cytometry

The flow cytometry core unit of the Institute of Microbiology, Infectious Disesases and Immunology at the Benjamin Franklin Campus of the Charité University Medical Center offers state-of-the-art equipment for multiparameter cell analysis and sorting as well as the corresponding expert service.

You are here:

1) Services

  • Instrument instruction and training for the analysis device BD LSRFortessa X-20
  • Assistance on BD LSRFortessa X-20
  • Cell sorting, including sort verification and sort report
  • Quality assurance at both flow cytometers
  • Assistance with data analysis

The services listed above require acceptance of the user guidelines.

2) Instrumentation

BD LSRFortessa X-20

The LSRFortessa X-20 from Becton Dickinson is a flow cytometer with 5 excitation lasers for the analysis of cells on single cell level. The 18 built-in fluorescence detectors enable parallel measurement of 18 different stained markers including 2 scattered light channels for identification of different cell types.

The optical configuration can be found here.

To ensure a high data quality, an intensive instrument training is necessary, before each user is using the instrument on its own.

The cell analysis on the BD LSRFortessa X-20 is available at any time for trained scientists.

BD FACSAria Fusion

The FACSAria Fusion from Becton Dickinson is a cell sorter with 4 excitation lasers, 16 fluorescence parameters and 2 scattered light detectors. It enables parallel single cell sorting of up to 4 different populations defined by up to 16 fluorescence markers into various reservoirs: microtiter plates, 5ml or 15ml FACS tubes, 1.5ml Eppendorf tubes. Surrounded by a sterile workbench, samples of the genetic safety level S2 can also be processed.

The optical configuration can be found here.

The instrument is staff operated only and can be used after prior discussion of experimental needs and technical possibilities.

3) Scheduling

All devices of the flow cytometry core unit of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection Immunology are booked via the openIRIS booking tool. Prior registration is required. In openIRIS the request for the use of the instruments is made via the menu item Services. After instrument training at the cell analyzer or discussion for variety experiments, the instruments can be booked via the booking calendar in openIRIS. The booking of the cell sorter is based on requests that require confirmation.

The BD LSRFortessa X-20 can be used daily from 0 to 24 hours.

The cell sorting service is available Mon-Thu 9.30 to 18.00 and Fri 9.30 to 14.30. In exceptional cases also outside these times.
